What is a Family Literacy Center?

National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) Defines Family Literacy as:

Children's Education is designed to promote the literacy development and learning of children, and also works to bring about lasting, meaningful involvement by engaging parents in their child's education environment.

Parent Time offers parents instruction about their children's literacy development and provides opportunities to explore strategies to support that development, while building on their own strengths and discovering new resources.

Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time® is a regularly scheduled time for parents and their children to participate in interactive literacy experiences in a supportive environment. As parents become more comfortable in their role as their child's first teacher, PACT Time helps foster skills to support education in the home.

Adult Education extends the learning experience for parents as they pursue their educational and career goals, gaining the skills they need to be effective employees, active community members, and leaders and supporters of their families.

Family Literacy Centers, Inc. (FLC, Inc.) Helps Communities Achieve Family Literacy

Family Literacy Centers have been established in both rural and urban communities across the U.S. They have been successfully organized in a variety of facilities including public libraries, senior centers, public schools, private schools, correctional facilities, public assistance centers, homes, and churches.

The centers place at-risk children or adults and their families with a caring volunteer tutor who employs a methodology tailored to fit individual learning needs. The emphasis is on early intervention with help in basic and intermediate reading as well as writing and computing. In addition to conventional print materials available at each center, FLC, Inc. is reaching out with new technology using the internet, TV, and state-of-the-art CDs and videos for both training and distance learning. As a result of the combined efforts of staff, parents and trained tutors, many students raise their reading levels by one-half grade each month. Students thus experience increased self-esteem as well as the ability to be more productive at school, on the job, and in their personal and community lives.
