What is Family Literacy Centers, Inc.?

Family Literacy Centers, Inc. (FLC, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity created in 1994 in response to a need to teach children and families how to read (View Introduction). FLC, Inc. has helped create many community centers within several areas in the United States. These can be located in libraries, senior centers, churches, prisons, businesses, schools or anywhere that public or donated space is available. Each center is independently run and offers free reading assessment and tutoring through proven, researched-based reading programs. They offer reading help to all family members who need it and require students to come for two 45-minute sessions during the week. Additional training for parents help them practice reading skills with their children in-between tutoring sessions.

The growing success of FLC, Inc., Inc. is attributable to a productive working board, an experienced creative staff, caring volunteer tutors, and general community support. Members of the Governing Board are also volunteers who include a cross section of professional and business leaders. FLC, Inc., networks extensively with literacy scholars and practitioners, schools, and human service agencies. It is the one catalyst that can pull together the public and private resources necessary to invent and implement a successful family literacy program.
